Matt Welch at Reason has a particularly good HST obit:
There are people, and I have been one of them, who will tell you that Thompson hasn't written anything of transcendent value since 1975. (Leaving aside for the moment that hardly anyone -- let alone his critics -- have ever climbed that particular mountain.)

But it speaks volumes about the height of his peak and the mastery of his language that 31 years later he was still one of the handful of writers I can think of with at least a 50 percent chance of making you laugh every time out, even when spitting out political hyperbole in half-cocked ESPN.com "sports" columns.

Yes, Hunter S. Thompson died -- that is old news. And yet, his Kentucky Derby article seems so new.
I got off the plane around midnight and no one spoke as I crossed the dark runway to the terminal. The air was thick and hot, like wandering into a steam bath. Inside, people hugged each other and shook hands...big grins and a whoop here and there: "By God! You old bastard! Good to see you, boy! Damn good...and I mean it!"

In the air-conditioned lounge I met a man from Houston who said his name was something or other--"but just call me Jimbo"--and he was here to get it on. "I'm ready for anything, by God! Anything at all. Yeah, what are you drinkin?" I ordered a Margarita with ice, but he wouldn't hear of it: "Naw, naw...what the hell kind of drink is that for Kentucky Derby time? What's wrong with you, boy?" He grinned and winked at the bartender. "Goddam, we gotta educate this boy. Get him some good whiskey..."

I shrugged. "Okay, a double Old Fitz on ice." Jimbo nodded his approval.

"Look." He tapped me on the arm to make sure I was listening. "I know this Derby crowd, I come here every year, and let me tell you one thing I've learned--this is no town to be giving people the impression you're some kind of faggot. Not in public, anyway. Shit, they'll roll you in a minute, knock you in the head and take every goddam cent you have."

Koei has announced plans for Dynasty Warriors 5 for the PS2. The game's official site is up, but isn't in an English version yet. Some kind soul has made a Dynasty Warriors comic.

As always, there's screenshots available (Guan Yu, 'nuff said). Character pics are available here. And if that was not enough, the English version to the Dynasty Warrior 5 cover is out:

Roasted-Chicken Noodle Soup
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup diced carrots
1 cup sliced celery
1 garlic clove, minced
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon poultry seasoning
6 cups fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth
4 cups diced peeled baking potato
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups shredded cooked chicken (about 12 ounces)
1 cup evaporated skim milk
4 ounces (2 cups) uncooked wide egg noodles

Heat olive oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add chopped onion, diced carrots, sliced celery, and garlic clove; saute five minutes. Sprinkle flour, dried oregano, thyme, and poultry seasoning over vegetables; cook for one minute. Stir in broth, potato, and salt; bring to a boil.
Reduce heat, and simmer, partially covered, 25 minutes or until potato is tender. Add chicken, milk, and egg noodles; cook for 10 minutes or until the noodles are tender. Yield: 8 servings (serving size: 1 1/4 cups).

An alternative to binge drinking on college campuses? Who knew?
The program began tentatively. On three Friday nights during the fall semester, alcohol was available in Dana Dining Hall to students 21 and over. Students paid $1 per alcoholic drink and were limited to two.

Not surprisingly, the program was popular with students -- at least those of drinking age. But the program was also popular with college administrators, who have decided to expand it to most Friday nights during the spring semester. (My emphasis.)

Deep Throat's identitity still a buzz; Watergate's longevity has ceased.
"Watergate isn't still fascinating. Not a whole lot of people are still reading or thinking about it. But Deep Throat has some kind of mystique," says Jim Doyle, who served as special assistant to the Watergate prosecutors.

The Chicago Tribune offers this story on the Mendota Beacon, UW-Madison's new conservative newspaper.

The Badger Herald's editor in chief, Cristina Daglas, chimes in:
Any other form of publication will help us keep on our toes.
But, she says:
However, I'm skeptical of a newspaper that openly comes out and says, 'We are going to lean to the right.' I'm going to be a little leery about what kindof news that will come from that.
Well, at least she's got the pressthink down.

Randy Dotinga continues the bloggers as journalists debate, this time focusing on whether bloggers deserve the same press protection as legacy media journalists (See idea No.1).

And -- what do you know? -- he quotes Jay Rosen.
Now in California, a court will soon decide whether bloggers have the same legal protections as journalists under "shield" laws that protect reporters from revealing their sources. Among Apple's targets is a 19-year-old blogger who twice recently leaked information about new company products weeks before Apple unveiled the products themselves.
UPDATE: The above pull-quote is not from Jay Rosen.
