Gutpunch City.

As a Packers fan, I'm not digging the past few days. With the emphasis on taking the best talent -- not on taking talent that will help in a playoff push -- the franchise seems to be eyeing the future. I have no problem with that.

However, with the recent news of Ahman Green's arrest and Javon Walker's holdout and Al Harris' alleged sexual assualt, I'm starting to feel a little dizzy.

ESPN's "SportsCenter" had a brief segment on the arrest of Packers RB Ahman Green. The anchor said that GM Ted Thompson said the organization supports Green and his family. Then, he said, Thompson declined further comment.

Interesting, but wrong. "Declined to comment further" would have been better.

Wrong emphasis:
The season is in full swing for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's newest club sports team, lacrosse, led by sophomore Ben Cagle and freshman Steve Miller.
The emphasis now is on "led by sophomore Ben Cagle and freshman Steve Miller."

That's a lot of losses!

If you are taking about losing seasons, then:

Wrong: Brewers try to end 13-year losing streak

Better: Brewers try to end 13-year losing-season streak

Best: Brewers try to end streak of 13 losing seasons

The Importance of 'That'

I saw an interesting sentence in an article yesterday:
A tribal police officer on the scene twice requested the college dropout turned millionaire rein in his temper.
Another case of the disappearing "that": "... requested that the ..."

And I thought I was going to be in college for a long time:
At the off-campus house Johnny Lechner shares with three other UW- Whitewater students, the stairway to his attic bedroom is lined with photos dating back to his freshman year.

Lechner has lost track of many of the buddies that posed with him at these long- ago fraternity parties and Homecoming parades. They have moved on to new lives - careers, wives, children, mortgages - and that's just not Lechner's scene.

"I could have - should have - graduated many years ago, but I keep passing on the real world's invitation," said Lechner, 28, who is in his 11th year as a student in the University of Wisconsin System, the last 10 at UW-Whitewater. He's taken a full course load every semester except the current one, in which he's taking seven credits.

Lechner has completed 234 college credits, about 100 more than needed to graduate and so many that he's now paying the so-called "slacker tax."

April Fool's Day to the extreme:

What started as an April fool's joke does not appear extremely funny to some. After BU's school newspaper, Pipe Dream, printed a front-page article about the "rape ride" service as a substitute to the University's "safe-ride" shuttle, many are not pleased with the gag. Included in the article is a photograph of a woman being attacked next to the rape ride van. Member's of the B.U. Women's Center were very upset with the publication and want a retraction and an apology from the school newspaper. The Women's Center says this article is so detrimental because any student who has been attacked previously will then be re-traumatized by both the article and photograph.
