For my sake.
Please keep all "for Pete's sake" out of stories. Just who is Pete, anyway? Is Pete capitalized or not? And why such an everyday colloquialism anyway? Let Pete sake someone else, please.

Small publishers also announced new titles at the San Diego Comic Con.
Highlights:
GIANT MONSTER #1 and #2 (of 2) "This September, Steve Niles arrives at Boom! with a bang. Steve and I like to joke about Giant Monster -- want to guess what it's about?! But with a more serious face, it's a story about an astronaut, Maggert, who arrives back into earth's re-entry from his first manned space flight, and as he does, he's consumed by a space parasite. Shortly afterwards, he's mutated into a monster, consuming anything he can get his hands on -- sharks, sailors -- and is growing larger by the minute. It's a wicked romp, lots of fun, and that's even before the Nazi robot shows up ..."
Japan Ponent Mon/Fanfare's Stephen Robson: "From Ponent Mon comes a huge new manga project called appropriately Japan. It looks set to be a veritable monster of a title, combining the works of 17 creators each giving their opinions and views on Japan."
The Times of Botchan "The Meija Era (1868-1912) was probably the most defining period in Japanese history. It marked a time of massive change from the more traditional Tokugawa Era to a positioning of Japan in the modern world."
Fat Boy and Harvey #1 It is written and inked by Howard M. Shum and penciled by E.W. Clayton. The cover is by Sean "Cheeks" Galloway. The comic is social satire and is about a young struggling artist and his kung fu loving cousin from Hong Kong.

Brian Wood will be a busy man. In addition to his ongoing DMZ Vertigo title, he has plans for a 12-issue series named Local that sounds a lot like Demo.
LOCALwill feature stand alone issues, each focused on normal people in extraordinary, life changing situations. Each issue takes place in a different town, with the town playing as much of a role as the characters themselves. The series will debut in November, and continue on a monthly basis.

At the San Diego Con, Brian Wood talked about his new Vertigo book, DMZ.
This ongoing monthly series follows a young photographer who's abandoned in an urban war zone. With no rules, no boss and an open expense account, he dives into an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at a war-zone and the people who live it in. When you think "urban war zone", you might picture some far-off country... but imagine it in New York; Manhattan, to be exact. Gone is the larger than life metropolis, replaced by sometime akin to World War 2-era Stalingrad.

The final hand in a poker showdown last night:
I had the small blind and was dealt A-3. I called the big blind and the big blind checked. Flop came 2h-2x-3h and I checked it. The big blind bet 40 and I re-raised all-in (about 160 more). He called and flipped over 4h-6h, giving him a straight draw, a flush draw and a straight-flush draw. Turn was a blank, but the river was a heart, sending me to the benches.

Colleen Mondor recommends Oni Press for people who are interested in reading comics for the first time.
Oni Press was founded in 1997 by Bob Schreck and Joe Nozemack, two guys who were thinking so far outside of the box that it's amazing the company survived, let alone thrived. What they wanted to do from the beginning was to publish comics that were "in line with the real mainstream." (Via NeilAlien.)

The San Francisco Gate had an interesting story on some protestors last week who were naked to get reaction from passersby. The protestors ("anti-war activists") were members of the Breasts Not Bombs group, which said the war in Iraq, and not their nakedness, is indecent.
The only problem I have with the article is why the editors and reporter decided to include breast sizes of the women. Does it lend credence to their cause?

UPDATE II: More reaction, this time from the Northern Star in Illinois.

Inside Higher Ed provides news on a study that suggests that the student loan debt madness is not as bad as some might think.
The study says that although the volume of loans and graduated loan debt has risen, the proportion of bachelor's degree recipients held steady and the median amount they borrowed declined in real terms.
Also, borrowing through private loans has increased.
