 Feminism is going strong.

The Onion has an interview with Dave Sim and his completion of Cerebus, but it reads more like a semi-screed against feminism.

Some of it is interesting, but most of it just sounds like Dave's opportunity to rail against those who have railed on him.

 Verbs: It's Whats for Dinner.

The New York Times has an interesting piece on Fox News Channel's Sheperd Smith, who refuses to use verbs in his nightly telecast. Some highlights:

Mr. Smith, let it be known, does not like verbs. Whenever he finds one, he crinkles his brow in disgust like a man who has discovered a dribble of food on his tie. He taps furiously at his keyboard, moves the cursor to the offending word and deletes it, or else adds "ing," turning the verb into a participle and his script into the strange shorthand that passes for English these days on cable news:
"Amazon.com celebrating a birthday! The Internet company 10 years old."

"Texas! A school bus and two other vehicles colliding in Dallas. The bus rolling over on its side."

"Outrage in the Middle East! A vow of revenge after an assassination and reportedly threatening the United States. Tonight — how real the threat?"

But, at the bottom of the first page, this:

Sandwiched between the right-leaning, opinion-heavy programs "Special Report" with Brit Hume and "The O'Reilly Factor," Mr. Smith stands out at Fox as a political agnostic, at least on the air.
First, why does the NYT feel the need to label the two shows sandwiching "Fox Reports"? There is none.

And by doing so, the NYT labels "Fox Reports" as the same. Heavy-handed journalism.

 Artistic Flow.

I've had a couple of ideas for paintings over the weekend. One was to cut out miscellaneous persons, places and things from old photographs and paste them up somehow on canvas. I would use panoramic shots for the background, probably mixing and matching until I got something that flowed. Then I'd use the miscellaneous others in some sort of surrealistic piece.

Another, similar idea was simply exchanging photographs with newspaper clippings. The blend of artistic palates would be appeasing, I think.

 Fun In Iraq.

From a Slate article about graffiti copied from Baghdad walls:

 SADDAM WILL RETURN!
And written underneath:
 THROUGH MY ASS!

 DONKEYS PISS HERE!
 And underneath is written:
 AND PIMPS AND BAATHISTS

SADDAM ATE BEANS AND EMITTED STINKY AIR

LONG LIVE SADDAM, IN SPITE OF HIS FOOL CRAZIES!
 And underneath is written:
SADDAM IS A PIMP; ASK YOUR SISTER!

 SADDAM THE PENIS SWALLOWER!

EVERYONE, SADDAM CRAPPED IN HIS TROUSERS

Those are just the humorous outtakes. Follow the link for graffiti more serious in nature.

 Cerebus.

I read the rest of the Latter Days trade today. The first time I read these second-half trades, I really don't look to pick up much; once I get to the second reading is when I start to focus my attention on all the smaller stuff.

I'm not certain what I should do now. That trade ends with #288. I have #299 and 300. Should I go out and buy #289-298 or should I just wait for the trade to come out in a few months (I'm guessing)? Ah, decisions, decisions.

 Over the Rainbow.

The comic book series Oz, based on Frank Baum's series, began with the humans uncovering a book and being transported to the land of Oz, where things hadn't gone so smoothly since Dorothy's time.

Here is "The Oz Comic Books Chronology and Story Synopses."

And then there's Bill Bryan's Long, Strange Trip Down the Yellow Brick Road, an article about Bill Bryan, the artist for the Oz series.

 Cerebus #299 & 300.

I finished reading the last two issues of the series just yesterday and I found that I was confused -- since I only buy the volume collections -- by the route of the "Latter Days" storyline. Obviously Cerebus further involved himself in religious matters, but just how that came to be, I don't know.

Aside from that, I wasn't too upset about Cerebus' death, other than it was to happen at all. The form of it, however, was what I was curious about since the turn of the new year. The fact that his death came about as a direct result of his clumsiness is pretty accurate, at least in terms of the way he led his life -- using copious amounts of ignorance and naivety. The way Cerebus would often find himself submerged in turmoil was clearly indicitive of the way he died. His carelessness and selfishness helped to bring about his demise.

I'm anxiously anticipating the arrival of Following Cerebus #1.

 Cerebus #300.

I bought it yesterday, but haven't had a chance to look through it. As soon as I read it, I'll post my comments on it.

I also picked up the first Latter Days TPB. Thoughts on that to come, too, but not for some time.

 The End?

I went to my local comic book store today; I was searching for Cerebus #300, but they didn't have it. I didn't ask, but they either had to have run out of copies or hadn't received the shipment.

But I did end up buying Cerebus #299. It was pretty liberating, considering I normally buy only graphic novels or collections of comics. Buying an individual issue was pretty weird, at least when it's not from a quarter or discount bin at a bookstore.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading that issue, even though the last issue I've read is #265 (the end of Form & Void).

I'll browse through other stores tomorrow in search of #300. And I'll watch out for Bone #55, too.

 Tyrant: The Dinosaur Comic Book.

"Tyrant," the definitive comic book authority on dinosaurs, follows the young life of a new-born T-Rex. By the second issue, the main character hasn't even hatched (the series ended after issue #4).

The creator, Stephen R. Bissette, talks about his works in these two interviews: this one by The Comics Journal, which ran in issue #185, and this one by Roger A. Ash, from August 1996.

 Libertarian Purity Score.

 Take it here.

 Your score is ... 34.
0 points: You are not a libertarian by any stretch of the imagination. You are probably not even a liberal or a conservative. Just some Nazi nut, I guess.

1-5 points: You have a few libertarian notions, but overall you're a statist.

6-15 points: You are starting to have libertarian leanings. Explore them.

16-30 points: You are a soft-core libertarian. With effort, you may harden and become pure.

31-50 points: Your libertarian credentials are obvious. Doubtlessly you will become more extreme as time goes on.

51-90 points: You are a medium-core libertarian, probably self-consciously so. Your friends probably encourage you to quit talking about your views so much.

91-130 points: You have entered the heady realm of hard-core libertarianism. Now doesn't that make you feel worse that you didn't get a perfect score?

131-159 points: You are nearly a perfect libertarian, with a tiny number of blind spots. Think about them, then take the test over again. On the other hand, if you scored this high, you probably have a good libertarian objection to my suggested libertarian answer. :-)

160 points: Perfect! The world needs more like you.
